A new canning plant, sized in its own announcement at 225 million cans a year, advertised production roles whose duties include stacking finished goods onto pallets by hand. What that is per person, per shift, is not in the public record. We worked it out from the plant's own published numbers.

The job the ad describes is the job a palletizing cell exists to do

At two stackers on two shifts, each person lifts a pallet's worth of cans every five minutes, all shift, for the whole year. Three production shifts lowers the per-person load by a third and moves nothing else. The labor behind it, two to three operators at $55,000 to $65,000 fully burdened, is $110,000 to $195,000 per shift per year, so $220,000 to $390,000 a year across two shifts our estimate, and the arithmetic scales down honestly while the plant ramps: at half of nameplate it is half those figures and the same decision, arriving sooner than the ramp finishes.

What the decision costs to get wrong

When the plant reaches volume, palletizing is either a robot cell or two to three people per shift, per line. Integration engineering alone runs $18,750 to $80,000, and a cell that misses its promised rate is a $150,000 to $500,000 mistake that runs for years our research. Our standard is the one in the published record: the number is predicted before the plant spends and measured after.
